Census Day

Eric.2Alright folks, this is a public service announcement from your friendly neighbourhood SAL, Eric.

August 31st is Census Day.

What’s that you say?

“All the commercials on the tv say that the census is on August 9th

Well, yes, that’s true too.  But it’s a different census.

Planning Life and Juggling Commitments

SamAs Uni students, we can often feel like we are trying to juggle hundreds of commitments at once. For example: finding the time to go to lectures, tutes, study, do assignments, keep healthy, work, family, friends, partners, getting drunk every now and then — the usual stuff! If you leave everything up in the air and unorganised it tends to get very easy to miss things and you end up having that dreaded feeling of regret when you know you should have done something but decided to take a quick nap instead.

I know you would have heard it all before: plan out this, plan out that, blah blah blah. But coming from somebody who never used to plan out anything, it really does pay off to spend a little bit of time to plan out different things in your life.

Studying Abroad

Eric.2So, you’ve got the opportunity to study abroad… Do it!

Maybe you don’t know about opportunities, but you’ve thought about it Well, look into it…and then do it!

Haven’t even thought about studying abroad? Well, think about it, then look into it, and then do it!

If you can’t tell, I’m a little biased about the whole thing.  For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Canadian. I’ve been living here for about 6 years, and started at FedUni in 2014.  But, waaaaay back in 2004 I came down to Melbourne to do a Grad. Dip. for teaching at Deakin. I’d just finished my first uni degree and had no idea what I wanted to do. And like so many other people, I thought “maybe I’ll be a teacher.” And then, right around the same time, I thought “maybe I’ll go to Australia.”  And then BOOM! It hit me: why not do both at the same time? Continue reading Studying Abroad

10 things I’ll miss about being a student

285736_514505705244967_163577496_nI’ve now been a student for around three quarters of my life and I cannot wait to be working and making money in the industry I’ve been studying for four years. But as I approach the end of my degree, I’m starting to get a bit nostalgic about how good it is to be a uni student. So here are 10 things that I’ll miss when I leave, and that new students should not take for granted.

ETIQUETTE LESSONS: Cinema

BethLittle known fact about me is I have over 6 years working experience in both Cinema’s and Live Theatre ushering. It is the worst – the magic veil has been shattered for me, and now I dislike going to the cinema because I no longer get discounts. But here’s some sweet tips to make everyone at the cinema your friend.

Where to park at Uni

Aimee

Now that you’ve got your head around your schedule and where your classes are located around campus, it’s time to think about parking.

For me, the first day I came to Uni I parked in a random location, I hadn’t figured out the campus so just sort of thought ‘anywhere will be a fine place to park!’ Basically I parked in the first carpark I saw, my car was under a tree which is essential in summer weather and it actually wasn’t a very busy car park. Succeeding at parking at Uni- tick! Naturally I just kept parking in that general area (I’m a creature of habit so once I’ve found something that suits me it generally sticks…for a while).

Budgeting and financial support

DSC_0142For most of us, life at university means we’re not only juggling studies but also a social life, family, and work. Studying at university means we are giving up some of our capacity to earn money. Plus, sometimes things happen out of the blue and we find ourselves forking out money on unexpected expenses (or finding ourselves struggling to pay for them). That means that managing our money is even more important, especially if we still want to be able to have those catch ups with friends, put money towards our savings goals, or simply build up an emergency fund.

Unraveling the Mysterious Classroom Numbers: Mount Helen Edition

Beth

Okay.  So you’re at this new University. Or new at this campus. You look at your timetable. First make sure you check it’s the right day (today has not been good for me, my friends). SO, you look at your day. You’ve got an 8:30am lecture, because the lecturers are cruel people, and it’s in B902.  Following straight afterwards with your tutorial in S240.

Saving Money with Textbooks

Sam

If you are annoyed at the fact you are spending waaaayyy too much money on textbooks, stop stressing!

You should be able to get most of it back, textbooks hold their worth fairly well and there is always somebody looking to get them a little bit cheaper so it’s a win win for everyone.

First off, the best place to sell/buy them cheaper if you are organised are the second hand book sales that happen usually in the first week of semester. For more information search “book exchange” from the Fed Uni website 🙂

Summer Internships

DSC_0142Hello everyone, and welcome back to semester 2! I thought it would be a good time of the year to talk about internships and summer vacation programs. But what are these, you say? Summer vacation programs are basically internships for university students that take place over the summer holidays. They’re usually for students who are in their second last year of study, and are a great opportunity to get some (usually paid) holiday work and experience in the real world, and are a great addition to your resume! What’s extra awesome about them is that doing such an internship may land you a graduate position! Imagine going through your last year of uni knowing you have a job secured at the end of it. Pretty cool, right?
