Video games make you smarter!

UntitledScience says play more video games. Okay, I may be paraphrasing and exaggerating just a little there.

Studies have shown that playing video games significantly increases the volume of grey matter in areas of the brain that are responsible for memory. These changes in brain structure could also help prevent/slow some neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, and help kids learn to read — even when the game has nothing to do with reading. This is because these changes increase both memory and focus.

Gamers who play fast paced games become quicker at gathering visual information and making decisions based on that information than non-gamers. These studies have shown that the gamers will be correct just as often as the non-gamers, but will come to their decision up to 25% faster than the non-gamers. Some studies have even demonstrated gamers making more correct decisions than non-gamers.

Not only do video games improve memory and decision making skills, but they also increase multitasking, problem solving skills, and reflexes!

So, if you keep running out of time during exams, clearly you need to play more video games. Wait… no… I mean… study more.

Of course, gaming can also have negative ramifications when overindulged, and not all types of games have these positive outcomes. But it’s still pretty cool, and I know I will totally be using this as an excuse to play more video games!

And now here’s some links so you know I’m not making things up!
